The 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has announced that patriotism will be a key criterion in selecting individuals to serve in his administration if the NDC wins the forthcoming elections.
He stressed that beyond qualifications, the next NDC government will prioritize those who demonstrate a deep love for Ghana in their public service roles.
Speaking at the 10th Public Lecture held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Mr Mahama reflected on the legacy of the late Dr Paul Victor Obeng, whose life and work exemplified the qualities of patriotism and dedication to national service.
The event was organised to commemorate the anniversary of Dr Obeng's passing.
Mahama emphasized that the late Dr Obeng's commitment to Ghana serves as a model for the kind of leadership he envisions for his next administration.
He pointed out that individuals who aspire to serve in government should embody the same patriotic spirit that guided Dr Obeng throughout his career.
The former president's remarks highlight his intention to build a government composed of individuals who are not only competent but also genuinely committed to the well-being and progress of the country.
According to the former president, fostering a sense of patriotism among public servants is crucial for effective governance and national development.
Mr Mahama thus called on Ghanaians to reflect on the life of Dr. P.V. Obeng and to consider the importance of patriotism in public service as the country approaches the 2024 general elections.
“It is our turn to speak out, to speak truth to power and if power refuses to act it will be our turn to act out what we would have spoken… PV Obeng loved Ghana. He was phenomenal. He was a political colossus. His love for Ghana was one of his greatest attributes and was one of the reasons that motivated me to appoint him to serve in my government in the presidency.”
“I look forward to appointing many such people like PV who loved Ghana besides whatever professional or other qualifications they might possess in my next government from January 7th, 2025,” he said.
