The National Democratic Congress flag bearer and former President, John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his Gold Board initiative, one he believes will have more success in fighting galamsey than the New Patriotic Party's 'Operation Vanguard.
The Gold Board aims at streamlining the activities of mining including galamsey will be instituted when he gains power in the December polls.
According to Mahama, the New Patriotic Party has failed to address the issue of galamsey even with the introduction of 'Operation Vanguard'
Speaking at Wamanafuo in the Dormaa East constituency, he said that the so-called 'Operation Vanguard' only focused on aiming riffles at the youth and causing havoc to the environment as the party members of the NPP benefit hugely from mining concessions.
Mahama stressed on the Gold Board agenda as to one which will engage qualified mining students from the University of Mines and Technology to help guide the miners and safeguard the environment.
He added that the Board would be committed to serving the interests of its members in terms of logistics and other pending matters as well as safety.
"We will provide the people and the community with machinery, as well as provide them qualified persons from our final year students at the university of Tarkwa, this will also reduce the congestion there as well."
He noted that all miners on the scheme will have a little portion of their earn money saved into the Gold Board account, this money will be used to rehabilitate the land after mining activities.
He further noted that the board will equip miners with knowledge on safe mining and how to conduct their mining activities in a way that will not endanger the environment.
“The board will train the youth in such a way that, after work, they will level the mining grounds, plant more trees in a bid to protect the environment,” he said.
