The NDC flagbearer, John Mahama, says his next administration will conduct a comprehensive investigation and forensic audit of the National Cathedral project.
In one of his Mahama Conversations engagements with the media in Accra on Sunday, the former President voiced his concerns about the transparency and accountability of the project.
Mr Mahama assured that an NDC administration would scrutinise every aspect of the project described as "the most expensive" to ensure value for money and adherence to good governance principles.
He explained that the forensic audit would involve a detailed examination of financial transactions, procurement processes, and resource utilisation to identify any irregularities or instances of corruption and to hold those responsible accountable.
“At the time this national cathedral came up, it was somebody’s personal commitment to God. And we were assured that public funds were not going to be used for the national cathedral. Unfortunately, we hear that 300 and something million has gone into it,” Mahama said.
“Where did those payments go? Were they justified? Who did they go to? These are all things that we have to unravel. And I think that that is the first thing we will do before we even decide what to do with that huge pit.”
He stated the need for a thorough investigation and accountability: “So first, let’s investigate and do a forensic audit and if people have, you know, illegally and unlawfully taken the money of the people of Ghana. They must be made to refund that money.”
Mahama’s commitment to auditing the National Cathedral project reflects his broader agenda of ensuring transparency and accountability in government projects.
