The Vice President and Flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says the government has revived and strengthened the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
He claimed that the NHIS was on the verge of collapse before the NPP government came to office in 2017.
The NHIS was initially introduced by the President John Agyekum Kufuor-led government.
Addressing stakeholders in the Suame Constituency in the Ashanti Region on Sunday, Dr Bawumia explained that the NPP inherited the programme in a poor state.
“The National Health Insurance Scheme was virtually collapsed under Mahama, but we have revived and strengthened it. We have injected so much money into it" he said.
He added that “Today, illnesses that were not covered under the NHIS are now included. Childhood cancer, for instance, is now free under the National Health Insurance Scheme."
Dr Bawumia also highlighted the inclusion of treatment for sickle cell disease, noting.
“Sickle cell sufferers also have access to a drug called hydroxyurea. It is a very expensive drug but highly effective for managing sickle cell. We have negotiated for it, and we are providing these drugs to sickle cell patients free of charge under the NHIS.”
Additionally, Dr Bawumia announced that following a successful six-month pilot, free kidney dialysis for individuals over 60 years old and under 18 will be expanded.
From December 1, 2024, dialysis will be free under the NHIS for all eligible beneficiaries.
