The 2024 flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has criticised the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) accusing it of overseeing the worse road conditions in the country’s history.
He argued that, contrary to the government's claims of unprecedented improvements in the road sector, major roads have been left to deteriorate, worsening the travel experience for many Ghanaians.
Speaking at an event in Hamile in the Upper West region, Mr Mahama commiserated with the family of the late Zakaria Saana Dramani, the Lambusie constituency chairman of the NDC, who recently passed away.
The former president used the occasion to highlight the government's neglect of critical infrastructure.
Mr Mahama contended that the Nana Addo administration’s proclamations of progress in road development are mere propaganda.
He emphasised that the reality on the ground is a stark contrast to the government's narrative, with many major roads in deplorable conditions.
In his address, Mr Mahama urged the government to prioritise genuine development efforts over political rhetoric, stressing the need to address the infrastructural needs of Ghanaians comprehensively.
”They go around saying that they have done more roads in the history of this country than any other government. Look at the road that goes to Techiman. All tracks that carry goods to Burkina Faso, Mali and other countries all pass through that road."
“Successive governments built that road. Every year we used to do routine maintenance. Since this government came, look at the Wa-Sawla road, look at the Bole-Bamboi road. Look at the Bamboi Techiman road, all in a very deplorable state.
“But when the president and the vice president come and people raise it, they behave as if they don’t know about it. You have six months left, when are you going to work on these roads?”
