The Bawku Central MP has accused Acting Special Prosecutor, Cynthia Lamptey, of suppressing evidence that could exonerate him in a tax evasion case against him.
Mahama Ayariga claims the Acting Special Prosecutor attempted to hide documentation that proves he paid tax on the imported vehicles, for which he is being investigated.
According to him, “the police officer testified in court that yes, she invited the custom officers, she interrogated them, they came with their lawyers and they all gave statements and the statements are in the office of the special prosecutor.
“So you can see a consistent pattern of suppression of evidence.”
Mr Ayariga tells JoyNews his lawyers are contemplating filing a case of malicious prosecution against Madam Cynthia Lamptey’s conduct.
"I mean why did she go out of her way to write a letter denying that such a crucial piece of evidence that goes to exonerate a citizen."
“My lawyer hinted at a possibility of taking up an action on the malicious prosecution and the conduct of the Acting Special Prosecutor would be looked into,” he said.
An Accra High court that heard the case Monday has therefore given the Office one week to produce the documentation.
Three years ago, the former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu began an investigation on the Bawku Central legislator who he said evaded tax in the importation of land cruisers using his official car loan.
