Ghana’s Shea butter industry faces the risk of collapse as foreigners have begun infiltrating the hitherto preserve of local dealers.
Local producers of Shea butter in the Northern region are therefore calling on the government for a regulatory body to oversee the pricing, marketing and export of Shea nuts - the raw material for the production of Shea butter.
The production of Shea butter is popular in the Northern part of Ghana, where the Shea tree grows wildly. Thus, most women particularly mothers, depend on it for their livelihood.
Although some young entrepreneurs like Jabir Mohammed have managed to improve the sale of the butter these women produce, the interest of foreign nationals in the production of Ghana's Shea butter they say, is the latest problem and stands the chance of crippling Ghana's Shea industry.
