Liverpool and Everton play out derby draw

Romelu Lukaku cancelled out Danny Ings' opener, as Everton and Liverpool played out a 1-1 draw in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

Before the match, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers praised his side's creativity and forward play, while warning his defenders that they needed to eliminate the mistakes that have been of a feature of the season so far.

So the Northern Irishman would have been aghast at Everton's equaliser in first-half injury time, as first Alberto Moreno allowed Gerard Deulofeu time on the right to float in angled cross, then Emre Can got his feet in tangle attempting to clear under minimal pressure.

Lukaku took full advantage of the errors, drilling home a low left-footed shot past Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

England international Ings had given Liverpool the lead on 41 minutes, with a close-range header in the six-yard box from James Milner.

Both sides were fortunate to end the match with a full complement of players, with Barkley and Lucas Leiva both testing referee Martin Atkinson's patience with late tackles following earlier yellow cards.

The sixth draw in seven Premier League matches between the sides sees Everton move above Arsenal in the Premier League into sixth place, although the Gunners could leapfrog Roberto Martinez's side with a win or a draw against Manchester United later on Sunday.
