Asante Kotoko the only team that secured an away win on match day 18 of the First Capital Plus Premier League will storm the Dansoman Carl Reindorf Park as they face in-form Liberty Professionals on Sunday.
Should Liberty beat the Fabulous army, it will be the first time they've managed home wins for two straight seasons, after winning 1-0 win last season at Dansoman.
For the defending, they'll be aiming to claim their second win in Accra in the space of four days following a gutsy 3-2 win against Olympics in midweek.
Reds boss David Duncan (above) will be seeking to duck increasing pressure to close the gap on AshGold after a hard fortnight for the Porcupine Warriors. He will rely, again, on team top scorer Ahmed Toure.
“We must win again on Sunday”, says the man with nine goals this term.
He scored a brace against Olympics. “Now we are at the seventh position and I believe another win on Sunday could take us into the top-4. Everybody will then know that Kotoko is back in business. We disappointed our home fans before coming to Accra so we want to go back with our heads high”.
Liberty will surely be tough as the Dansoman side have won their last three games - and are undefeated in six. The key man has been national youth team striker Kennedy Ashia, who's got eight goals this season and is Liberty's leading scorer in the league.
Team news
Liberty Professionals
They have the current best undefeated run in the ongoing First Capital Plus Premier League, having won all their three home matches and drawn the three away games, hence 6 matches without a defeat.
They managed to hold New Edubiase United to a goalless draw at the Obuasi Len Clay Sports Stadium in the mid-week, but their last home game ended 3-2 in their favour against Heart of Lions.
Kennedy Ashia is Liberty professionals’ leading top scorer in the league with 8 goals to his credit.
The Scientific Soccer lads are 5 on the league log with 27 points, after 7 wins, 6 draws and 5 losses
Asante Kotoko
The Porcupine Warriors got back to winning ways after two consecutive defeats by beating Gt. Olympics 3-2 at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium on Wednesday.
David Duncan’s charges have lost one league game in 4 away league matches under his guidance (W2, L1) and Kotoko have won 4 lost 2 and drawn 2, since David Duncan took charge of the team.
Ahmed Toure remains the leading top scorer of the Porcupine Warriors with 9 goals in his goal account. He scored a brace to inspire his side beat Gt. Olympics in the mid-week.
Asante Kotoko following their away win in the mid-week have lift themselves up from 11 place to 7 place on the league table, with 6 victories, 7 draws and 5 defeats.
Head to head
This will be the 30 league encounter between these two sides in clashes that date back to 1999.
Kotoko have the Lion’s share of their meetings, having won 19 games, with Liberty winning 5 and 5 ending in draws.
If Liberty Professionals beat the Champions, it will be the first time they would manage victories over Kotoko in two continuous seasons at home, following their 1-0 win last season at Dansoman.
The Dansoman based side have won 4 and lost 7 of their 14 league matches against Asante Kotoko and until last season’s 1-0 win over the latter, they had lost their 3 consecutive home matches to them.
The league champions defeated Liberty Professionals by a goal to nil in the first round of the league, apparently their last defeat in 7 games.
The game will be a show of class between Ahmed Toure the leading top scorer for Asante Kotoko and Kennedy Ashia the marksman and leading scorer for Liberty Professionals, with 9 and 8 goals respectively.
