Former GES Director-General, Prof Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa

The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has ruled out reversing government’s easing of restrictions on educational activities over cases of Covid-19 in some schools.

Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa says letting the Senior High School finalists and second year Gold Track students go home is not the way to go for the education authorities presently.

He was responding to National Democratic Congress MPs and communicators who have called for a re-closure of schools after some schools began to record Covid-19 cases.

Currently, 55 cases of the pandemic has been recorded at Accra Girls SHS in the capital.

Other schools across the country have also recorded multiple cases of the novel coronavirus.

MP for North Tongu who is former Deputy Education Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has called for the immediate closure of schools.

He told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday that the government has no business keeping students in schools while some government corporations and Ministries are closing after recording cases.

But speaking at a press conference Tuesday, Prof. Opoku-Amankwa says the government has no intention of sending the students home.

He said letting them go would be “a disaster to the larger public” since they may be carrying the virus and can spread it.

“Our best option is to keep them if there is any issue, because if you decide to let them go into the bigger society, then you are going to rather close down the entire country…” he said.
