The Amansie South Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has appealed to the public, especially sympathisers of political parties, to be measured in their utterances ahead of the 2024 general election.
They must avoid activities that can plunge the country into chaos but rather engage in campaigns devoid of character assassination, misinformation, and disinformation.
Mr Ariston Antwi, the District Director of NCCE, made the call at a parliamentary candidates’ dialogue organised by the Commission for Parliamentary Candidates at Manso Adubia.
It provided an avenue for the candidates to engage the electorate in their vision to transform the constituency when given the nod to represent them in parliament.
Mr Antwi said elections are democratic processes for the selection of leaders and must not be used as a vehicle to sow seeds of discord among Ghanaians.
He stressed the need for politicians to embark on clean and responsible campaigns aimed at convincing the electorate to vote for them rather than inciting them to perpetrate violence.
He entreated Ghanaians to pursue the Ghana agenda which is to contribute towards a peaceful election instead of ensuring victory for their parties at all cost.
The NCCE Director said it was worrying that after eight successive elections under the Fourth Republic, citizens continued to struggle to embrace tolerance which is a cardinal principle for peaceful elections.
He reiterated the need for the electorate to eschew vile partisan politics and advised them to be guided by the spirit and letter of the 1992 Constitution.
Three parliamentary candidates are vying for the Manso Adubia Constituency parliamentary seat, and they were all present to share their vision for the constituency.
They are Mr. Yaw Frimpong, the Incumbent MP, Mr. Benjamin Marfo, National Democratic Congress (NDC), and Madam Selina Adom, Peoples National Convention (PNC).
Nana Kwasi Oppong, a representative of Adubiahene who chaired the event, charged political party leadership to be proactive in ensuring the elections are peaceful and incident-free.
