The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif says government is committed to creating a safer environment for footballers and fans at the stadium.
May 9, 2024, marks the 23rd anniversary of one of the darkest days in Ghanaian sports history—the May 9 Stadium disaster which claimed the lives of over 127 football fans during a league match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko on May 9, 2001.
The day serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of prioritising safety and security in sports events. It was a day that shook the nation to its core and highlighted the need for stringent measures to prevent such tragedies from ever happening again.
Ussif in a statement on his Facebook page, expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who perished in the tragedy.
He emphasised the importance of reflecting on this solemn day and renewing our commitment to creating a safe and secure sporting environment for all.
"The government and I, along with all stakeholders in the sports industry, are deeply devoted to ensuring the safety and well-being of our athletes and fans," Ussif stated.
The May 9 Stadium disaster serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and proactive measures to safeguard the lives of sports enthusiasts.
Minister Ussif urged all stakeholders to prioritise safety and adhere to strict protocols to prevent similar incidents from occurring.
"As we reflect on this solemn day, let us recommit ourselves to creating a safe and secure sporting environment.
"May we honour the memory of those we lost by working together to ensure that tragedies like the May 9 Stadium disaster never happen again," he said.
