Legon students urged to calm down

An old vandal, Mr Willie Amarfio, has called for tolerance and patience on the part of the students of the University of Ghana while efforts were made to find lasting solution to the accommodation and other problems facing them. Mr. Amarfio, who is the Asere Dzaasetse, under the stool name of Nii Amar III and the acting Asere Mantse, made the called when he presented a cheque of $1000 as his contribution towards the Golden Jubilee celebration of Commonwealth Hall. He said like many other alumni of the university, he was saddened by the recent acts of violence and lawlessness at Legon, which he believed was a very dishonorable thing for students to do. Mr Amarfio admitted that the population explosion at Legon which has seen the figure rising from a mere 2,500 in the 70s to the present 28,000, was a contributory factor to the problem and lamented that successive governments had not been able to cope with the situation. The traditional ruler, who is a lawyer, called on the students to comport themselves as gentle people and refrain from any act that would tarnish the image of the Hall and appealed to parents to ensure their wards refrained from acts of indiscipline while on campus. Mr Amarfio, who was once a JCR president of the Commonwealth Hall and also a member of the Council of Elders of the Old Vandals, promised a further assistance of $1000 soon. Receiving the contribution on behalf of the planning committee of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations, Nana Akuako Sarpong, the Agogo Omanhene, who is also the Chairman of the Council of Elders of Old Vandals, thanked Mr Amarfio for the gesture. He called on all Old Vandals to contribute positively towards the Golden Jubilee Celebrations. Source: GNA
