Security analyst Dr. Ishmael Norman, says the police witnesses in the ongoing investigation into the leaked tape purporting to plan the ouster of the IGP, are doing the nation a great service.

According to him, their testimonies are bringing to light the long, festering decay of the Police Service and are giving lawmakers the opportunity to address the situation before it implodes.

He was speaking on the backs of allegations of frustrations, partisan politics and mismanagement within the Police Service as narrated by the three police officers whose voices had been identified in the leaked tape.

Speaking on JoyFM’s Midday News on Tuesday, the security analyst explained that a lot has been going wrong with the Service and it just so happens the situation may have become overbearing during the tenure of IGP George Akuffo Damapre.

“The witnesses are doing a great service to Ghana. The Police Service has been a problematic Service for a very long time, not just under this IGP. Except that a lot of things have crystallised under him only because of the way he has been running the system.

“So I think we all have to be very concerned that if the security of the people, only the government that can provide security and the Police Service is one of the major providers of security in the country according to realism theory of governance, then we have to be very careful,” he said.

He added that the problem of identity politics in the police force cannot be blamed only on the IGP, but on the political establishment as well.

“Because if the system has now been inundated with identity politics, NPP, NDC, and so on and so forth, we cannot blame the IGP only for that. We have to blame the political establishment also.

“So it is important for Hon. Atta Akyea and Hon. Agalga to collect as much information as possible and I’m happy that they’re going to talk to the people that have brought a lawsuit against the IGP which is unprecedented in the history of Police Service in Ghana,” he said.

“There are various systemic problems in the Police Service and this investigation is just the opening, the tip of the iceberg. When they go deep into it, they’ll see a lot more,” he added.
