Head coach Kwesi Appiah has jumped to the defence of Asamoah Gyan after his decision to customize his captain’s armband was heavily criticized.
The 50 goal striker wore an armband draped in national colours with his image embedded on it.
The act would have gone unnoticed till Kwesi Appiah decided to replace his captain with Lorient striker Abdul Majeed Waris. Gyan left the pitch with his band still on with deputy, Andre Ayew, having to request for the original band from the bench.
This clearly took some shine off Kwesi Appiah’s first competitive game for Ghana in his second spell with Gyan’s actions dominating the headlines but the coach believes there was nothing wrong with the decision.
“There is no confusion in camp, there is peace in the camp, there is no captaincy issues as speculated,” he told the media.
“What happened was that the armband was a customized one specifically for Gyan to mark his 100th cap for the National team.
“Because of that Ayew couldn’t wear the banned with Gyan’s picture on it, so the idea was if Gyan is substituted, Ayew will be handed the original arm-ban so that is what happened.”
Gyan opened the scoring for Ghana as they began their qualifier on a positive note.
