Former Ghana youth international, Najeeb Yakubu, has accused the Ghana Football Association President, Kurt Okraku of sabotaging his national team career for refusing to sign with his club, Dreams FC.
Najeeb who now plays for the Niger national team, was part of the squad that secured a 2-1 win against the Black Stars at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, November 18, 2024.
But he could have represented Ghana, if not for his strange disappearance from the pool of national team players in 2021.
Yakubu was part of a Black Meteors team that had been selected for a tournament in Japan, but he could not make the trip after officials for the national team decided to leave out his passport from the pile submitted to the Embassy.
Speaking on Prime Take with Muftawu Nabila on Joy News, Yakubu alleged that the passport saga was only possible because his invitation had been rescinded on the orders of the GFA President, Kurt Okraku.
“I think it’s the GFA president Kurt [Okraku who took out my name from the U23 squad that travelled to Japan in 2021 for the friendlies]. I think he has a personal problem with me,” he said.
“When I was in the U-17, he [Kurt Okraku] wanted me to join his team, Dreams Fc. Unfortunately, I couldn’t join his team [and he took it personal].
Najeeb Yakubu first gained national prominence when represented Ghana at the FIFA Under-17 World Youth Championships in 2017. The right back started all five games as Ghana made it to the quarter final stage of the tournament in India.
Since the alleged passport saga, however, the Madina born and bred full back was invited to any of Ghana's national teams again before he switched nationality in 2022.
