Reports reaching Myjoyonline indicate the Kumasi Central Market is on fire.
Stores and other structures close to the market have been razed, a destruction Love FM's Elton John Brobbey say could run into several millions of cedis.
He said two kids sleeping in one of the stores are feared dead, but official confirmation is yet to be made.
The cause of the fire cannot immediately be confirmed, but Brobbey said personnel from the fire service have arrived to put out the raging fire.
The personnel are said to be confronted with the challenge of gaining access to the market, a situation he noted has led to the speedy spread of the fire.
Looters who took advantage of the situation to steal properties from victims have been arrested and handed to the Kumasi Central Police Station for prosecution.
