Kufuor leaves for four-nation trip

President John Agyekum Kufuor leaves Accra on Tuesday to begin a four-nation diplomatic assignment that would take him to Belgium, Ethiopia, Egypt and Nigeria. The Press Secretary and Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Andrew Awuni said in a press statement that the President’s first stop would be in Brussels, Belgium, where as Chairman of the African Union, he would meet with the President of the European Union, Mr Jose Manuel Barroso. The statement said the two leaders would discuss co-operation between the AU and the EU and identify new frontiers for better partnership. They would also preview the upcoming Group of Eight industrialized nations (G-8) summit and exchange thoughts on the agenda and where necessary, adopt common positions in the interest of their Unions. It stated further that President Kufuor would continue to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to join other African Heads of State to lay the foundation stone for the construction of the new Conference Complex of the AU Headquarters on Friday, May 25. The ceremony coincides with Africa Day, a day dedicated to promoting values, principles and prospects of Africa. The statement said the third leg of the President's duty tour would take him on a three-day state visit to Egypt as guest of President Hosni Mubarak. The two leaders are expected to review relations between their countries, discuss global politics and consult on a number of issues relating to the upcoming AU summit in Accra. The last stop of the duty tour would be in Nigeria and here he would attend the investiture of President-elect, Alhaji Musa Yar'Adua. President Kufuor is expected back home on May 30. Source: GNA
