Off the heels of a well-received debut ‘5Foot3’ Extended Play in 2022, Kookusi could not have delivered a sequel below the standard he set for himself.
For a Ghanaian rapper fairly new to the game, the audacity it took to drop such a laser-focused project about insecurities seems to be the same phenomenon directing his fresh work.
No holds were barred on this one. The recording artiste-cum-PhD candidate is taking on the big leagues with yet another project, Greetings From Abroad EP.
Nana Kofi Kusi-Boadum as he is known outside music circles decided to, this time, chronicles the struggle of every Ghanaian youth exploring methods to seek greener pastures elsewhere.
Kookusi is currently an immigrant himself in the US pursuing further education in neuroscience, and so name one person to better-tell this story than the artiste himself.
The cinematic bop transcribes the nitty gritties of the process and even touches on culture shocks and unanticipated hits that take shape when one is eventually successful at the venture.
The EP’s title is inspired by a 2000s Ghanaian TV show which was primarily dedicated to extending felicitations from families in the diaspora to relatives back home.
All these experiences are encapsulated in the 7-track EP led by an emphatic ‘Japa’ force, reinforced in the opening song ‘Greetings’.
‘Japa’ a Yoruba word meaning 'to leave' symbolises the recent mass exodus of young West Africans to Europe and the Americas for better living conditions.
It features musicians such as AratheJay, RBD, Victor Morgan, Michael Adjaloo, Li Diaw, and Muyra Hub Studio. RdeeBeatz and Christoven have production credits as well.
All these talents join hands in bringing the true light in the imaginary slush of green grass in the continuing sub-plots weaved into this beautiful body of work.
The EP was Executive-produced by Kwaku Li Diaw and distributed by Eastern Child.
