Opinion leaders at the Kokomba Market in Accra have accused politicians of manipulating some residents in the area to foment trouble.
At a press conference held in Accra on Wednesday, the chairman of Old Fadama Development Association, Abdulai Suleimana warned politicians to desist from such acts.
The market, noted for the sale of food stuffs, has often been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, with the latest being a violent clash between supporters of the NPP and the NDC which left three people dead.
Abudulai Suleimana told Joy FM’s reporter, Sammy Darko that a bi-partisan mediation committee has been instituted to ensure a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
The committee is also mandated to help repair the foul image that has been associated with residents in the area.
According to him, over 55,000 people reside in the market popularly known as ‘Sodom and Gomorah’ and the association will resist any attempt by the Metropolitan authorities to evict them.
He said the area has provided shelter for dozens of less privileged families from different ethnic groups across the country and any attempt to evict them will worsen their plight.
