A member of the Energy Commission and founder of the United Renaissance Party (URP) Kofi Wayo has described as untrue reports that the Tema Oil Refinery is incapable of refining the crude oil being produced from the Jubilee Oil Field.
He said the only way Ghana can benefit from the oil is to have its own refinery to process the crude which will make the prices of petrol cheaper.
According to him there is the need for the government to put down measure in setting up a refinery so that Ghanaian will benefit.“If you have found oil then petrol should be cheaper. In Saudi Arabia oil is cheaper than water”.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Energy Edward Bawa confirmed earlier that Tema Oil Refinery in its current state is technically incapable of refining the sweet light Jubilee Oil.
He explained that TOR is in no hurry to acquire the needed equipment for that because government believes the country’s brand of crude needs to be exposed to the international market.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Kofi Wayo expressed his disappointment in the oil experts in the country whom according to him have not contributed to the development of the country.
Kofi Wayo blamed former President Kufour for signing the wrong contract. He said “in plain business sense we have a lot but the only hope we have is that we have a president who is not corrupt and so I believe he will try and get something for Ghanaians from the oil fined”.
Dr. Arthur Kennedy a lecturer at the Cape Coast University and a member of the NPP on the other hand said he is not surprised that Ghana can not process its own crude because our leaders lack foresight.
Meanwhile Communication Director at the Presidency Koku Anyidoho has reiterated the President commitment in ensuring the people of Western Region get what they deserve.
He added that plans for the region may exceed the 10% the Western region chiefs demanded.
