The Chairman of the Council of State Professor Kofi Awoonor has asked for a renegotiation of the mining contracts of some of the multinational gold mining companies.
He says after centuries of their mining operations, the country has little to show for the tons of gold mined from poor communities.
Professor Awoonor who was speaking to Kwaku Owusu Peprah, Joy FM's Western Regional correspondent in Takoradi says lessons from the mining sector should inform how the country manages the benefits of the oil industry.
“Ghana has been producing gold for over 100 years, what have we got to show for it?” he quizzed.
“You go to the gold producing areas and they are studies in poverty and deprivation.
“This administration of Prof Mills should not allow that to happen to oil. So therefore even the gold and minerals and such other things we must re-examine the various concessions in the interest of Ghana.
“Lets look for equity,” he implored.
