It was all a Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology affair as start-ups from the University picked the top two positions at the National Demo pitch competition.

Mchan Organics, which is into the conversion of cocoa pod to organic products won the ultimate prize of ₵50,000 followed by Smart Farm, which is into the provision of sustainable solutions to farmers’ challenges, winning ₵30,000. The University of Ghana took the third position.

Mchan Organics won 1st place at the National Demo pitch competition and were 2nd at the KNUST SRC Think it, Fund it pitch.
Smart farms took the 2nd position at the National Demo pitch competition.

The competition is funded by the British Council, with support from the Impact Hub Accra and Imperial College London.

Students from the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the University of Cape Coast took part in the competition.

Interestingly, Mchan Organics had won second position at the KNUST SRC Think it, Fund it pitch some hours earlier.

Speaking to Joy News, the group said the prize money will be crucial for their business expansion.

“With the prize we’ve won, we’re going to use it to expand our business,” said Hannah Appiah, leader of Mchan Organics.

A reception was organized by the KNUST Centre for Business Development and the KNUST Incubator Centre for the two winners and winners of the Think it, Fund it pitch.

Head of the Centre, Dr. Samuel Yaw Akomea pledged continuous mentorship for the winners to boost job creation in the country.

“We’re going to admit the top three into the incubator. We’re not going to leave the rest. They’re also going to be part of us.

“In the coming semesters, we’re going to provide more money to our student entrepreneurs. In this incubator, we tell them to create wealth for themselves and create jobs for Ghana,”he noted.

KNUST Centre for Business Development organised a reception for the winners.
