The College of Health Sciences at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is seeking collaboration with private and public manufacturing industries in the commercialization of research products.
Provost of the College, Prof. Christian Agyare, says the partnership would facilitate an improved healthcare delivery in Ghana.
He spoke at the maiden edition of the College of Health Sciences Excellence award.
“We want to take our research to the next level by commercializing some of it so that we can get something for the university and ultimately improve whatever we have been doing in terms of systems and other aspects in the country and the world.
“What we are hoping and requesting from the industry is collaborating with them for them to come up with their challenges that they are facing, and we can conduct research to enhance whatever they’ve been doing,” said Prof. Agyare.
The College of Health Sciences, KNUST, has over the years played crucial roles in Ghana’s healthcare space.
The College since its establishment in 2005 has churned out a number of health professionals in resourcing the inadequate workforce in the health industry.
It is committed to providing proactive research-based solutions to positively impact society.
Prof. Christian Agyare says management of the University is inclined not to produce students and staff with only exceptional academic prowess but also research oriented and innovative.
“We’ve introduced community engagement, innovation, and entrepreneurship. We want our students to not only perform well in academics. At the end of their education, we want to produce the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs.
“For the teaching and research staff at the college, we want them to focus on impactful research that will come out with patents to attract commercialization,” he said.
Prof. Agyare however noted the College lacked adequate funds to conduct more impactful research.
“We need funds to conduct research. At the end of the day, this will result in research output that we have been churning out,” he said.
Management honoured some of its junior and senior staff at the maiden edition of the College of Science Excellence award.
The winners were awarded for their profound contributions to national development through research, innovations and community engagements.
Dr. John Amuasi was adjudged the Best Senior Member for his innovative research.
Touching on state-sponsored research, he emphasized local research works have proven to be feasible in providing lasting solutions to Ghana's challenges.
“We need to invest more in home grown research. COVID-19 has shown us that we can solve our problems and we understand our problems better.
“I and other researchers conducted a lot of work at home that informed national policies to address COVID-19,” he said.
