Ghanaian rapper, singer, and songwriter, Kofi Kinaata has expressed excitement following the mention of one of his songs by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The king, who was delivering a speech during a banquet held for members of the Ghana Bar Association in Kumasi, used Kofi’s 'Susuka' song to emphasise the point that Ghana’s stable democracy and the work of its judiciary are envied on the continent regardless of the shortfalls.
“I can think of many countries that look up to Ghana and wish they were just like us. Sometimes listen to the wisdom of our musicians and reflect on a piece like Kofi Kinaata's 'Obi nya waye,' [To wit ‘Someone wishes they were like you] the King said.
He noted that despite the nation’s challenges, many countries aspire to be like Ghana, urging citizens to appreciate the gains made.
After hearing the news, Kofi took to his social media handles to acknowledge the King’s words.
In one video, Kofi is seen telling people how glad he is to have his name in Otumfuo's speech.
There is another video in which the songwriter watches Otumfuo's speech on a laptop, and is heard saying he has stopped writing music and that he rather watches speeches.
He also did a post to acknowledge the value of Otumfuo's mention for his brand.
"By mentioning my name, every number has increased. ..streams, views, and social media engagement. Ɔpemsoɔ Medaase. Piaaawww!!" he wrote.
Kofi Kinaata is largely touted as one of the best lyricists and songwriters in Ghana. He is hailed for the depth of his songs and the didactic messages they carry.
He has won the songwriter category in the Ghana Music Awards for four times.
His song, 'Susuka', conveys a message of contentment. It encourages people not to measure their successes and well-being by other people's achievements.
Kofi is known for other songs such as 'Thy Grace', 'Things Fall Apart', 'Saman', among others.
