Interior Minister Albert Kan Dapaah has rejected assertions by Minority NDC MPs that the Police Administration is not doing enough in curbing the spate of killings in the country.
Mr Kan Dapaah says the perception is false and an unfair assessment of the Police Administration's efforts at tackling the problem.
The Interior Minister was responding to an urgent statement in Parliament by the MP for Tamale North, Alhaji Abubakari Sumani.
The MP described the trend as worrying and said the situation cast a slur on the country's image.
He said death has been part of life since creation, however the nature of violent deaths recently experienced in the country are “extremely alien to Ghana and is leaving Ghanaians in a state of fear and shock. If people can walk to homes and shoot their victims, how safe are those of us who are fortunate to be alive?”
He said no one would be willing to open his doors to receive visitors at the risk of putting their lives in the hands of contract killers and urged Parliament, being the voice of the voiceless, to urge the President, Interior Minister and Police to halt the menace.
But Mr Kan-Dapaah said the positive efforts of the police must be recognized.
He said the police had made significant inroads into the recent murders of former Deputy Managing Director of the Ghana Commercial Bank Rokko Frimpong and Nii Kwartei Quartey, who was killed last week in Tema.
“I can confirm that the police have made very, very significant inroads into the investigations and we have arrested key people, and they are also being taken care of by the courts; people we believe, or the police strongly believe were involved in the killing. There was the case of Nii Kwartei Quartey, I can simply say, Mr. Speaker at this stage that very, very important arrest have been made. They are also going through the court processes even as the investigations continue.”
He said at worst, the police deserve commendation for the good job they have done so far and should not be discouraged.
