The Spain international has been replaced as Diego Simeone's top target by prolific Sevilla striker Kevin Gameiro.Gameiro, who scored 29 goals last season -- a haul that saw him attract interest from Barcelona -- would cost around £35 million.Atletico "will call a halt to their pursuit of Costa" if he arrives, the Mirror said, adding that new Chelsea manager Antonio Conte's reluctance to sell the forward "forced them to look elsewhere."

'MATUIDI CAN LEAVE PSG'
New PSG boss Unai Emery says Blaise Matudi can leave this summer.The midfielder has been linked with a move to Manchester United, and Emery said: "He is a very good player. We have a lot of left-footed defensive midfielders. "If he has the opportunity to leave and if he thinks there are too many midfielders here… But I do not want him to go."

SANE WANTS TO LEAVE SCHALKE
Manchester City target Leroy Sane has informed Schalke he wants to leave the club this summer.Sane, who was part of Germany's Euro 2016 squad, is scheduled to return to training in Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday following an extended summer break.Schalke value the winger at £40m but City have so far been unwilling to meet their asking price.
Lyon have released a statement saying they have not received a €48m offer from Arsenal for Alexandre Lacazette, contrary to a report in Le Progres. The statement reads: "The club regrets yet again that Le Progres did not decide to contact us before publishing this false information that has created confusion on the day where the Group, on the stock exchange, publishes its annual accounts showing €218.1m, a progression of 111% from 2014/15."The reality is that the club Arsenal made an offer worth €35m, which Lyon did not follow up on for one reason: OL will keep Alexandre Lacazette who is irreplaceable and who is one of the main leaders in Bruno Genesio’s squad."

Arsenal have held transfer talks with Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi.The Gunners are believed to be in the market for a new centre-half with Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny both set to miss the start of the season.Arsenal are said to have held initial talks with the agent of Mustafi over the possibility of a summer move.

Antonio Conte says Chelsea have no intention of selling Nemanja Matic this summer.The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to Serie A champions Juventus following the £32m arrival of N'Golo Kante at Stamford Bridge.But Chelsea boss Conte has insisted the midfielder is very much part of his plans for the new season."Matic is an important player for me, a very important player," the Italian said. "In my idea of football he is an important player and he knows this."N'Golo, Nemanja, Cesc [Fabregas], Oscar, [Nathan] Chalobah and [John Obi] Mikel, who is in the Olympics, it is not easy to choose. I want to have this problem."
VILLARREAL CONFIRM PATO
Alexandre Pato will join Villarreal from Corinthians after an unsuccessful loan spell at Chelsea last season.The Brazilian striker joined Chelsea on loan at the end of January but scored just one Premier League goal and left the club with Radamel Falcao on July 1.Although Corinthians were expecting Pato to stay at Stamford Bridge next season, they have now confirmed on their official website the 26-year-old will join La Liga side Villarreal after selling their stake in the player.
RANIERI BEGS MAHREZ
Claudio Ranieri has begged Riyad Mahrez to stay and continue lighting up the Premier League with Leicester.The champions are battling to keep PFA player of the year Mahrez after he helped fire them to a shock title triumph last season.And boss Ranieri insists Mahrez is better off sticking with the Foxes than joining one of his suitors, who include Arsenal and Barcelona.Ranieri said: “I think Mahrez for us is very important as our light. If he goes in another big team, there are so many lights, so many stars, why?“Stay with us, it’s much better, much better. He’s our champion. If he goes in another team, there are so many champions.”

TIOTE IN NEWCASTLE EXIT TALKS
Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote in advanced talks to join Al Jazira. The Ivory Coast international is negotiating a three-year contract worth £4m a year.Newcastle are yet to comment but we understand Tiote hasn't travelled for the club's pre-season friendly at Southend.
REAL BRACED FOR JESE OFFERS
Real Madrid are awaiting offers for Jese Rodriguez.Jese has slipped further down the forward pecking order at the Bernabeu following the arrival of Alvaro Morata earlier this summer and coach Zinedine Zidane has recommended he leaves the club in search of regular first-team football.Bernabeu officials are keen to listen to offers for the Spaniard and they are aware that the player is coveted in the Premier League and La Liga.
JUVE CONFIRM HIGUAIN
Juventus have confirmed the signing of Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli on a five-year deal. The Argentina international becomes Juventus' biggest signing of a summer in which they have already brought in Miralem Pjanic, Dani Alves, Marko Pjaca, Mario Lemina and Medhi Benatia.
DONE DEAL
Paris Saint-Germain have signed Giovani Lo Celso from Rosario Central on a five-year contract for an undisclosed fee. The 19-year-old, part of the Argentina Olympic team next month, will stay with Rosario on loan for the rest of 2016 before linking up with PSG in January.
GRADEL COMMITS TO CHERRIES
Bournemouth winger Max Gradel has committed his future to the Cherries by signing a new four-year deal.The 28-year-old Ivory Coast international will now remain at the Vitality Stadium until 2020.“We are delighted to secure Max’s future with us,” chief executive Neill Blake said“He is a player we know well and a player that has done great things for this club over the years.“As a club we are constantly looking to strive forward and Max shares that philosophy with us. When does the transfer window open?
The 2016 summer transfer window opened on Thursday, June 9 for Premier League clubs.
When does the transfer window close?
The 2016 summer transfer window will close on Wednesday, August 31 - two and a half weeks after the start of the 2016/17 Premier League season.
Do European leagues have different dates?
While France's Ligue 1 has the same transfer window dates as the Premier League, there are slight differences in Spain, Germany and Italy.
The summer transfer windows in La Liga, the Bundesliga and Serie A do not open until Friday, July 1.
However, like England and France, the transfer windows in the top flights in Spain, Germany and Italy all close on Wednesday, August 31.
So far, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has signed with Manchester United, Ilkay Gundogan has signed for Manchester City, Sadio Mane has joined Liverpool while Arsenal grabbed Swiss international Granit Xhaka....
