With the Barclays Premier League's Saturday start upon us, the major European football leagues will follow in a cascade shortly.

And here at #JoySports, We. Are. Ready.

A new season means a new look for the various clubs set to compete once again for glory. The Bundesliga kicks off August 14, La Liga resumes August 22 and Serie A a day later.

It is interesting to note that despite looking forward to a new season, many of the teams will be wearing jerseys whose designs are not exactly new.

In this Joy Sports special wrap, Kwasi Gyamfi takes a look at the jerseys your club’s players will be wearing next term. From England to Spain and then Italy and Germany.

ARSENAL

Arsenal unveiled their away kit while on preseason tour in front of ecstatic Singaporean fans. The away jersey is golden yellow while that of the home jersey remains red and white. They remain with sponsors Fly Emirates and Puma as kit makers.

-

CHELSEA

Chelsea will defend their title in a new jersey next season. The club unveiled their home jersey on Thursday afternoon. The new jersey features new sponsors; Yokohama Tyres. The deal with Yokohama is worth £ 40 million a year. Their previous deal with Samsung was worth £18 million and this takes them second place behind Manchester United whose deal with Chevrolet is worth £ 53 million.

-

SWANSEA
We start with Swansea City FC, Andre Ayew’s new club. Ayew’s arrival sees the Swans get a new look which is very much inspired by their city’s history. The new look sees the Adidas and club logo on the left and right side of the shirt. The most significant change are the gold trims around the shirt. This represents the city’s history in copper mining in the 19th century. Home kit on the left; away to the right.

LIVERPOOL

Liverpool also unveiled their new away jersey while on tour in Gold Coast, Australia. The red and white jersey way unveiled in a skydive by legendary former striker Robbie Fowler. Fowler, who jumped from a plane initially said he was nervous but perhaps, the tagline of the jersey; “Hold Nothing Back” perhaps emboldened him. The shirt is predominantly white but the collar and sponsor’s name are in red. The Reds unveiled their home jersey just before the last season ended.

-

MANCHESTER CITY

Sterling will no longer be in red after his record breaking transfer to the blue side of the Manchester. Man City have also not made any significant changes as it remains with its sky blue colours. Unlike Santiago Bernabeu, Etihad is adopting the polo collar in its new jersey.

-

MANCHESTER UNITED

The world’s most popular club, arguably, has gone back three decades for inspiration. The new jersey is not exactly new as it looks similar to the club’s jersey worn in the '80s through to the '90s. It also pays tribute to shirt worn by Old Trafford legend; Ryan Giggs in 1990 on the hem. The designers of the kit define its colour as “real red”. United signed a 10 year deal with Adidas worth £750 million after 13 years with Nike and the German kit maker is expected to make $2.5 billion in sales during the decade-long partnership. It is no surprise the shirts don’t come cheap; it would set any Red devils fan £60. United would be hoping that the motto of the kit which is “Breaking Expectations” would spur them on to glory in the new term’s campaign.  The away jersey is yet to be released.

Spain

ATLETICO MADRID

Atletico’s new jersey is also steeped in history in their home and away jerseys. The club goes 20 years back to pay their respects to the huge successful 1995/96 squad which won the La Liga and the Copa del Rey. Diego Simeone and his boys (you see Arda Turan here, but of course he's moved to Barca now) will hope for the successes chalked two decades ago in those shirts can be replicated this time round. Madrid’s new sponsor Plus 500 is also featured on their shirts.

-
BARCELONA

Barça’s will hope to make political statements when its players line up at Camp Nou. Their new yellow away jersey is in solidarity to the flag of the Catalan region. Many Catalans want to break away from Spain to become an independent state; something the authorities in Madrid appear not ready to hand to them. The other dramatic change sees Barcelona ditching the vertical stripes for circular bands in line with that of the flags waved by their fans. Nike, UNICEF and Qatar Airways continue to make appearances on the kit.

-

REAL MADRID

FIrst thing you notice in the photo is that Iker Casillas is in it. Lots of GH Madridistas will be sad that he won't be wearing it, but it is what it is. Rafa Benitez’s side have pretty much stayed with its traditional plain white unlike their fiercest rivals. Perhaps the most significant change Madrid fans will see is grey replacing the black stripes along the shoulder sleeve. The new jersey also does not feature the polo neck collar seen last season. Of course, “Hala Madrid y nadas mas” [Come on Madrid and nothing else] is firmly etched at the neck of the shirt. An authentic Real Madrid home jersey will set you back $160 if you are interested in getting it.

Italy

JUVENTUS

The Old Lady has also stayed with the iconic black and white stripes after signing a six-year deal with clothing manufacturer Adidas. The famous black and white we have all come to associate the club with is not as iconic as you thought as Juve initially started off with pink when the club was founded in the late 19th century. Their new away kit goes back in time to pink which was ditched in 1903 (102 years ago).

-
AC MILAN

After two seasons experimenting with new designs, AC are back with their classic black and red stripes. The shirt will be hoping that going back to their roots will rekindle the success flame which appears to have died in recent seasons with sponsors Fly Emirates returning on the shirts.

-

INTER MILAN

Inter have followed their neighbours AC by going back to a classic from the 1990s. The club won the UEFA Cup in the 1990/91 season after 30 years of no silverware. They hope that the nostalgic effect of the design will inspire the team to another victory after a long time.

-
AS ROMA

Many Italian clubs seem to be going back in time to find inspiration for their designs. AS Roma will be looking to the very very distant past for inspiration. The new design is inspired by the armour worn by Roman warriors. Roma will be hoping that the victories of its ancestors on the battle field will be translated in a bloodless battle with its opponents on the field.

France

OLYMPIQUE MARSEILLE

Olympique Marseille have kept their trust in Adidas to design their jerseys. The new home kit sees the return of the iconic sky blue color which was left out of their pack last season. The crest on the home jersey has a never seen before design. The circular crest of the new Marseille combines the colors light blue and white with golden details, while the normal club crest is placed within the ring shape. The away kit has vertical designs on them with the colors being black and light blue. Interestingly, the away jersey has the same design as German champions Bayern Munich’s home jersey.

PSG

The Parisians’ new look for the season is made by Nike and the airline Emirates maintains its sponsorship. The home shirt stays with the club’s traditional navy colour. It has a round neck and a red horizontal stripe in the middle. When PSG visit other stadiums, they would however have a v-neck collar and unlike dark blue shorts for the home jersey, the away jersey is completed with white shorts. The away jersey pays tribute to the city of lights with the phrase; “Ici c’est Paris” which translates as “This is Paris” on the inside collar area.

BAYERN MUNICH

Guardiola’s men will have the club’s motto “mia san mia” [we are who we are] on the neck of their new shirts as they return to their all-red jersey. Munich’s away jersey for the season is predominantly white however it has a number of other colours including red and black tonal bands across the chest.

-

DORTMUND

Although BVB will stick with Puma in the new term, the design for this season has changed. The new home shirt is predominantly yellow, has a V-neck collar and black horizontal strips. The club’s long term main sponsor Evonik returns for another season. The away jersey from last season’s campaign will make another appearance for the new season. The shorts for both home and away are still black with a few yellow patches.
