AshGold are the champions. And everyone else is a loser. Or something like that. As part of our season reviews, the Joy Sports team looks at those players who showed so much promise, yet gave us so little.
Stephen Amos profiles ten for Joy Sports.

Gilbert Fiamenyo (Hearts):
He was voted the league's best player in January. Those were happier times for the big forward, who showed it was just flattery. Five goals in the first three games and you would have thought Fiamenyo’s breakthrough season at Hearts is finally here. Perhaps a minimum of 20 goals? But no, he chose to press the self-destruct button. How? After extending his tally to EIGHT goals with that brace against B.A United on match day 11 in March, the ugly head of egos set in on Fiamenyo’s part vis-à-vis his colleagues and technical team.
The bulky 23-year-old forward began having problems with teammates and even had a bust-up with his team manager. Gilbert (above, pictured) took on an I’m-the-main-man-now-so-show-me-some-respect attitude. And it failed him beautifully. Probably, he must have been misunderstood but these behind-the-scenes events affected him on the pitch. He lost his form and turned into a bench warmer towards the end of the first round..and then and for the rest of the season. Fiamenyo still managed to chalk 18 games this season, three of which were subs appearances (vs. AshGold, Hasaacas and Kotoko in the second round).
-
Elvis Opoku (Aduana):
He was their big signing after the release of flop Kofi Owusu (whose fortunes, ironically, rather turned at new club Berekum Chelsea where he's just become the league goal king).
Opoku, the FA Cup goal king last season with lower tier side Bibiani Gold Stars arrived with so much promise but got to know the difference in standards and competition at the top division. He gave a fair first round performance and then completely lost the plot in the second. A lack of goals from Opoku (below, pictured) is probably a key reason why Aduana fizzled out of the title chase in the last weeks of the season.
-
Samuel Afful (Hasaacas):
Most Promising Player of the 2013/14 season, he remained just that: PROMISING. Maybe that bad run may end this season.
But this was really supposed to be his time to shine and many said so. Sadly, Afful (right, below pictured) couldn’t light up the league and his four goals is a serious indictment on the Ghana U-20 forward. To cut him some slack, he might have been affected by that ‘dramatic’ omission from the Black Satellites squad to the U-20 World Cup. His frustrations led him to receive a needless red card against WAFA in Sogakope.
-
Tamimu Muntari (Liberty):
Three seasons it's been and the highly-rated winger is still unable to, at least, match that form he displayed at former club Tudu Mighty Jets before their relegation. Somehow, but his clear potential still got him a place in the Black Meteors squad at the All Africa Games. And the one-goal scorer in the FCPPL this season has been warming the bench there too. That's simply a confirmation of his form and life.
-
Shafiu Mumuni (AshantiGold):
The former Wassaman United man showed so much promise in his first two seasons with the new league champions. He copped 9 goals over two seasons from midfield and was highly tipped to run the show for the Miners this term. But perhaps, the collective step up from other players was too much for him. Whatever. His dip in form got the young man, who coach Bashir Hayford usually relied on to start games, to now come from the bench more than he did in previous seasons. Shafiu managed just two goals all season.
-
Asiedu Attobrah (Edubiase):
The Bekwai superstar’s spirits must have been angered by the change of home venue to the Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi.
Attobrah ended up playing more minutes at a Community pitch somewhere in Tema than he did all season for New Edubiase. His involvement with the Black Satellites and the Meteors prevented his club from benefiting from his services and when he was finally available, the playmaker chose the path of a revolt.
He demanded payment of his outstanding monies from the club and stayed farther away from the team. All season, Attobrah featured in just three games for Edubiase – against Inter Allies and Kotoko.
-
Frederick 'Freddie' Quayson (Hasaacas):
Denied a return to his former club in the transfer window after an impressive run in the 2013/14 season, the athletic forward has not been himself despite starting in over 80% of the Sekondi club’s games this season. Psychological challenges or diminishing returns? Bar goalkeeper George Owu, Quayson must be the oldest and experienced player at Hasaacas. He still managed five goals, though.
-
Sulley Mohammed (Inter Allies):
The lanky forward (below, pictured) arrived as one of two major signings by the Eleven is to one side along with Frederick Boateng. Both joined from relegated sides King Faisal and Ebusua Dwarfs respectively and have ONE goal between them in the FCPPL. But is Sulley who comes off worse, more, the unlucky one. He has struggled to stay on his feet as his season has been plagued by injuries. He has managed nine games with five starts. GOALS? Zero. The highest paid Inter Allies player definitely needs all the luck from above to just stay fit in his second spell next season.
-
Joseph Owusu Bempah (Hearts):
When he was dropped from the Black Satellites starters after captaining the side, but played poorly in the game against Panama at the U-20 World Cup in New Zealand, you'd have thought it was just one of those days. Hindsight shows it was the onset of a decline. He never played again till Ghana exited the World Cup and on his return to club duty in Accra, there was a certain first timer in Fatawu Mohammed who had stepped up. Bempah (below, pictured) walked straight into the Hearts XI after the defeat to Kotoko but struggled to live to the standard. He has since lost his place to the former Red Bull Academy youngster.
-
Abeiku Ainooson (Kotoko):
”I know I have not been up to it this season. I would have politely withdrawn my name if I had been shortlisted. These injuries have had a better part of my season but I’m on my way back to form.” Words from the horse's own mouth. The centre-back made this point when Kotoko instituted their monthly player awards in July. So much was expected from Ainooson, especially after copping two major awards last season – the FA Cup MVP (below, pictured) and league's best defender - but he has never been the same since injuries set in. He has looked rusty and often out of pace in the games he played for the Porcupine Warriors. His story has mirrored the team’s poor season.
