Joy FM’s Sports Journalist, Gary Al-Smith on Thursday, donated some sports equipment to the Savelugu School for the Deaf, a special residential school in the Northern Region.
The items are to help the school in their preparations and participation in sporting competitions.
The items included ten footballs, two basketballs, two volleyballs, two sets of jerseys, a set of socks, whistles.
It also included five bags of rice and three gallons of cooking oil.
Al-Smith a United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) influencer said he procured the items through his social network.
The donation, he added was under the auspices of the Sporting Chance project, an initiative he has started.
According to him, the project is to use his influence to get support to assist the underprivileged, using sport as a vehicle.
The journalist said he followed a request to him by one of the pupils of the school, Albert Abdul Rashid earlier this year to supply them with sports equipment.
Al-Smith emphasised the need for every child to be supported to realise their full potential saying “For Every Child, Every Right”.
Alhaji Mohammed Haroun, Northern Regional Director of Education encouraged the pupils of the school not to feel daunted by their situation but to see themselves as equal to others and work hard to ensure success.
Headmistress of Savelugu School for the Deaf, Gertrude Dasah said sports activities was an area the pupils were interested in; assuring that the school will continue to work to impart skills to the pupils to help them to contribute to national development.
Meanwhile, UNICEF has presented 10 copies of Sign Language Dictionaries to the Savelugu School for the Deaf to help improve teaching and learning at the school.
