The Member of Parliament for Bole Bamboi, an influential member of the opposition National Democratic Congress has told Joy FM that he is unaware of his alleged selection as running mate for the party’s presidential candidate for the 2008 elections, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills.
In brief remarks to Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, John Mahama who is expected back from London at the weekend said he had not heard any such news.
The Statesman newspaper reported on Wednesday that the leadership of the NDC has endorsed John Mahama, as the running mate for presidential candidate John Evans Atta Mills.
The paper quotes its sources as saying the decision was taken at a marathon National Executive Committee meeting of the party last week.
“But, our sources point to other unhealthy developments within the party last week, with some very senior members of the party still engineering for the resignation of Prof Mills as presidential candidate,” the paper reported.
The paper however, said the resignation option would be a total non-starter to the overwhelming majority of both the party leadership and activists.
According to the Statesman, the decision to make John Mahama, a Christian from Bole-Bamboi, as running mate has also reportedly divided the north. Several key persons within the party feel the NDC should not cede the Moslem vote advantage to the NPP and are therefore strongly rooting for 'No Change'. The 'No Change' camp want Mohammed Mumuni to be chosen again as running mate, after he forfeited his parliamentary seat to be on Prof Mills' failed presidential ticket in 2004.
There were also those who preferred Betty Mould Iddrisu, the wife of political veteran Mahama Iddrisu. Alhaji Iddrisu lost the NDC flag-bearer contest to Mills in 2005.
