The Propaganda Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Richard Quashigah says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have completely misunderstood their description of President John Mahama as a youthful candidate. The issues of President John Mahama being youthful than the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag-bearer Nana Akufo-Addo has become a subject of debate between the two leading political parties in Ghana with the NDC arguing that its candidate is young and can perform better than Akufo-Addo. Isaac Kwame Asiamah, Member of Parliament for Atwima-Mponua, during the NPP’s manifesto launch last Saturday argued that John Mahama does not fall in the youth bracket of 15 and 35 years per the National Youth Policy, which Mr. John Mahama signed in August 2010. According to him, “if you are 54, then you are way and above that age bracket by 19,” and therefore must not call yourself a youth candidate. However, Richard Quashigah speaking on Election Headquarters on Joy FM Monday stressed that the NPP MP got it all wrong. He said, Isaac Asiamah “misunderstood it all, unfortunately. We are not necessarily playing the youth against the old. The election is not just about one attribute but it is about varied attributes that are required to convince the Ghanaian electorate to vote for party A or party B.” The Propaganda Secretary explained that, “When we say President Mahama is relatively young, we are not saying necessarily he is a youth and people must get clear the difference between one being young and being a youth.” He agreed with the Atwima-Mponua MP “but we are saying that President Mahama is relatively young, bursting with a lot more energy than a candidate who is approaching 70 years.” Richard Quashigah was of the view that age is key in the sense that a much younger candidate like John Mahama is likely to perform much more efficiently than an older Akufo-Addo.
