Joe Gidisu: Luxury BMW is project car not a gift

Roads and Highways Minister is threatening legal action over media reports he has received a luxury BMW 7-Series as a gift from the Chinese company constructing the Achimota-Ofankor road. Joe Gidisu in an interview with Joy News’ Sammy Darko admitted receiving the car but said it was never a gift as the media would have the world believe. According to him, the car was offered as a project vehicle by the Ghana Highways Authority for use by his ministry and not to him as a personal gift. “That car was never a gift to me as Joe Gidisu in office as minister for Roads and Highways. It was a car bought by an agency under the Ministry, that is, the Ghana Highways Authority where we have documents covering the request and delivery of the vehicle to the GHA on behalf of the ministry,” he explained. Whilst insisting on his innocence, Mr Gidisu threatened legal action against what he said is mischievous reports in the media. “With that news I am referring the case to my legal advisors for the necessary action. And I am never the type who should be associated with such a deal,” he said, adding the car is for the use by sector minister. Asked if it was the Chinese company that financed the cost of the plush vehicle, the minister said: “That is why I am telling you that it is a project vehicle bought on a project account which is usual with the ministry and other ministries that run projects.” When probed further to find out why a plush BMW will be used as a project vehicle instead of a rugged Pick-up, the minister said Sammy Darko must come to his office for further details. The Daily Guide newspaper in its September 5, 2011 edition published that the president on hearing of the “Minister’s BMW car gift” ordered that the car be impounded at the Castle. But Mr. Gidisu will not publicly comment on that and offered that the interviewer meet him in his office for further clarification. A road contractor who spoke to Joy FM insists the purchase of a project car by a company executing a road project in Ghana smacks of bribery. Osumanu Guarantee said the practice must not be entertained.
