The structure of the Premier League Board is set to undergo a drastic shake-up following a proposal to increase its membership in what may be seen as a coup d’état against the current board.
The substantive chairman of the board, Mr. Welbeck Abra-Appiah, announced his resignation pending the clearance of the last premiership game of the just ended 2010/2011 season in apparent frustration by a decision of the Disciplinary Committee of the Ghana Football Association.
Sources told the Graphic Sports that if the proposal was approved by the executive committee, the new PLB would be headed by the chairman of the champion club of the preceding season.
It disclosed further that the PLB would now have a l6-member board made up of representatives of the 16 Premier League clubs, a system that the FA says will be in consonance with best practice in the world.
The new policy is in line with a resolve by the president of the GFA, Kwasi Nyantakyi, at his recent endorsement for another four-year term to overhaul the local league and make it attractive once again.
It was against this background that the Chairman of the English Premiership League, Sir Dave Richards, was invited by the FA for a brainstorming session in search of solutions to reverse the low patronage of the local league.
But observers believe that it is an attempt to create opportunities for a large pool of the FA boss’s supporters who describe themselves as foot soldiers waiting to be engaged on the various sub-committees.
