Jawula backs FIFA on security guarantees in Cairo

Former Ghana Football Association chairman Lepowura Alhaji Mohammed Nurudeen Jawula believes, FIFA will guarantee the security of Ghana in Cairo during the crucial 2nd leg World Cup play-off against Egypt.

Current FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi and the Minister of Youth and Sports Elvis Afriyie Ankrah have been making their reservations known on the matter in the last few days.

Mr. Afriyie Ankrah has gone a step further to request for a meeting with FIFA General Secretary Jerome Valcke over safety concerns in the Egyptian capital.

But Lepowura Jawula says Ghanaians should be rest assured of maximum security for the Black Stars team.

“FIFA would have done a lot in the quiet, it does not happen anywhere that a team goes and gets into trouble,” said Alhaji Jawula in an interview with Joy Sports

“I have been match commissioner on two occasions in Cairo, I was specifically to go and commission matches there at the heart of confusion, some of the matches were moved to the military stadium which was even safer because it was a military area and before you go there they would have searched you thoroughly before you get access.

“I know we have general fears, the FA president is expressing them same as the Sports Minister but what I can be sure about is we will not be allowed to go and play a match when FIFA is aware that something can go wrong.”

Ghana defeated Egypt 6-1 in Kumasi on October 15 during the first leg encounter.

The return leg is scheduled for the Air Defence Stadium in Cairo on November 19, 2013.
