President of Innovative Teachers Association, Stephen Desu has described as unacceptable the use of Covid-19 as a reason to get laptops for teachers.
According to him, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and National Association of Graduate Teachers' (NAGRAT) call is unjustifiable.
“How could GNAT and NAGRAT use Covid as a reason for teachers to get laptops.. on what basis are talking about Covid-19 as a reason for giving teachers laptop?” he questioned on PM Express.
This, he said was due to the challenges in the education system in terms of network challenges moving education online.
“Ghana is not Accra and even in Accra there are places that the network is working is even bad. I am talking about places where there is no electricity, I am talking about places in Ghana where you have to climb trees before you can make a simple phone call, I am talking about places where internet connectivity is nowhere to be found, I am talking about places, I am talking about poor parent who cannot even afford food. all of a sudden these children became rich overnight, they can afford tablets, the whole Ghana became electrified,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service (GES) says it has distributed about 80% of the 62,000 laptops to teachers in Senior High Schools under the project.
According to GES, phase one of the One-teacher One-laptop project which was launched on September 3, 2021, is expected to be completed on December 17, 2021.
