Former Sports Minister Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has strongly denied accusations that he bought one coconut for $100 during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
The allegations emerged in the wake of the Black Stars’ disappointing performance in the tournament, which was marred by controversy, including the transporting of $3 million in cash to pay player bonuses.
The claim that Ankrah spent an excessive amount on a single coconut became one of the more sensational accusations following the team's underwhelming campaign.
However, the former minister dismissed the allegation as “completely senseless” in an interview with Channel One TV on Tuesday, 26th November.
Afriyie Ankrah described the accusations as part of a smear campaign intended to tarnish his reputation in the aftermath of the Black Stars’ poor showing at that World Cup.
He emphasized that such claims were baseless and had no merit, calling them nothing more than unfounded gossip.
He also reflected on his previous testimony before the Brazil 2014 Commission of Inquiry, where he became visibly emotional while discussing the issues surrounding the team’s preparation and performance.
The former minister reiterated his innocence and expressed his frustration at being linked to such frivolous allegations.
“And also the focus was on unnecessary externalities, and sensationalism. Yes, things happened in Brazil, I was in charge and I took responsibility and apologized. But there was so much focus on non-essentials. Up till today, people think that I bought a coconut for $100, completely senseless. And all things that are not true and necessary.”
“I was the central victim, do you know what it means to be put on television, for four months, live coverage? Horrible stories, every day you are on the front page. Different stories, lies and I was told not to speak. You know what that means? But I have gone through it, I survived. And I have forgiven them and I have moved on," he stated.
