Minority MPs are demanding more than just the arrest of embattled former Sanitation and Water Resources Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah.
The Special Prosecutor placed the former Minister under arrest today [Monday] July 24, following controversies about huge amounts stolen from her Abelemkpe residence for which five people are standing trial.
The situation forced her to resign after a huge public outcry. In her resignation letter addressed to the President, she explained that she decided to step down because she did not want this matter “to become a preoccupation of government and a hindrance to the work of government.”
According to the NDC MPs, they expect a speedy approach from the Special Prosecutor to ascertain the source of the $ 1 million, 300,000 Euros and the millions of cedis reportedly stolen.
The MPs making the demands are Builsa South MP, Dr. Clement Apaak, Tamale Central MP, IbrahimMurtala Mohammed and Bole Bamboi MP, Yusif Sulemana.
“It is not just arresting her, about arresting her, Ghanaians expect agility from the Special Prosecutor to get to the bottom of these issues so that we know the source of the money. Because we are need, the country is broke.
They added that if discovered that the ‘stolen money’ belongs to the state, then it should be retrieved with interest.
“Given the circumstances which of course have agitated the minds of Ghanaians to discover this quantum of money stolen by house helps in the house of a public servant, raises a lot of questions. So, Ghanaians are eager to find out the source of money – whether legitimate or not, and secondly, what such huge amount could be doing in someone’s residence when we have banks,” they added.
Speaking to JoyNews, the NDC MPs cautioned the Special Prosecutor to be wary of potential interference from the president.
They also called on the president to take the issue seriously.
Another MP called for Cecilia Dapaah's account to be frozen and her house ransacked.
But the former Sanitation Minister is disputing the amounts quoted on prosecution charge sheets to have been stolen in all, saying they are inconsistent with what she reported to the police.
