Despite choosing to represent Ghana, Mohammed Salisu has asked for more time before he gets into national team football.
The Southampton defender failed to honour his debut Black Stars call-up in 2019 citing injury problems.
Last year, Charles Akonnor admitted that the Ghana Football Association had made contact with Salisu concerning playing for Ghana. However, the association's effort was deemed unsuccessful with the 22-year-old rejecting the opportunity.
In a recent interview with MozzartSport Kenya, Salisu expressed his desire to now represent Ghana's senior national team.
"I'll be so proud to play to my country, to play with Ghana, the national team," the defender said.
The former Real Valladolid player quickly indicated he is in no rush to pursue an international career as he believes cementing a crucial role in Southampton's team should be his priority.
"But I think this is not the right moment to play in the national team. I think I need to focus on the club side because I am young, I think I need to focus on the club first and then after, when everything is fine, I can go and play for Ghana."
The defender signed for the English side from Real Valladolid last summer, for a fee of €10.9m.
His debut for the The Saints however did not come till their 2-0 FA Cup win over Wolves six months after his signing.
