The Chief Executive of the Chamber of Independent Power Producers, Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, has dismissed the government’s decision to restructure arrears owed to IPPs.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express, Mr Apetorgbor stressed that, IPPs will not allow the government to implement the restructuring programme to its arrears.
His resistance come after the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta during the presentation of the Mid-year budget, noted that his outfit is engaging with IPPs to address the impact of excess capacity payments on the economy.
According to Ken Ofori-Atta, the government is considering ways to restructure its accrued debts.
He noted that the discussion will also be geared towards the elimination of payment shortfalls and arrears accrual in the energy sector.
But the CEO says they are only open to payment plan and not restructuring.
“IPP has made its position emphatically with regards to the debt restructuring that we are not open to that. We are open to a discussion that focuses on the payment plan for our arrears.
“So for the debt restructuring, that is not a position the IPPs are willing to accept,” he said on Monday.
According to him, the IPPs have written several times to the government on the subject.
