The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association says it will in the coming days, like to play an active role in policies that affect health delivery in the country.

According to the Association, being just recipient of policies formulated by its employers is not enough to impact meaningfully to the development of health care delivery.

New President of the Association, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, at the handing over ceremony in Cape Coast asked their employers to institute policies that will raise the profile of nursing and midwifery in Ghana and make it central to health policies.

“Considering the triple impact reports by the all-party parliamentary group on global health of UK adopted by the WHO, it argues that strengthening nursing and midwifery will have a triple impact of improving health, promoting gender equality and supporting economic growth.”

According to her, the institution of such policies will facilitate the sharing of good practices among nurses and midwives in the health delivery sector in order to achieve universal coverage by 2030.

“It should also enable nurses and midwives to work to their full potential by developing new ways of sharing good practices, developing and sharing the evidence of the impact of nursing and midwifery on access to health, its quality and cost and the impact on the journey to achieve universal coverage by the year 2030.”

She’s pushing for a vibrant trade union that will advocate better conditions of service for the nurse and the midwife.

“We need to be unified and understand that we are much stronger together than when we are fragmented. Yes, when it comes to our professional training and career progression we have nursing and midwifery running parallel to each other.

“But let us take note that absolutely nothing bars us from having one strong trade union where we can speak with one strong voice and actually achieve whatever we set our hearts and minds on,” she said.

The association also used the handing over of power from the Dr Kweku Asante Krobia-led administration to the Perpetual Ofori Ampofo administration, to commission its guest house.

The Omanhene of the Oguaa Traditional Area, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, appealed to the association to maintain the guest house it has just commissioned.
