Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to make the completion of the Pwalugu Dam a top priority, using private sector support to secure grant financing.
He outlined his plan to utilise private sector investment to crowd in grant funding for the project.
The Pwalugu project, for which sod was cut in 2019, was expected to consist of a hydro-solar hybrid system with 60 MW hydropower and 50 MW solar power and to be completed in the second half of 2024.
However, the contractor was nowhere to be found after $12 million had already been invested, and parts of the site have been turned into farming areas by locals.
Speaking during the NPP manifesto launch on August 18,he said, “I will prioritise the construction of the Pwalugu Dam by using private sector financing to crowd in grant financing."
In addition to completing the Pwalugu dam, Dr Bawumia promised to tackle food security issues by stabilising local food prices and enhancing agricultural production.
According to him, stabilising the prices will upscale the production of stable foods.
“Invest in the preservation of staple foods, meat, poultry and fish products, and establish agricultural enclaves which will have irrigation, processing and storage facilities in each region for crops or grains in which the regions have a comparative advantage."
