The Caucus of Assembly members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, has called on Ghanaians to ignore former President John Mahama's promise to pay salaries to assembly members when re-elected as President.
It questioned why the Former President was now promising assembly members all sorts of goodies just four months to election, having left office for almost four years.
Nana Kofi Senya, a leading member of the Caucus, addressing the media in Kumasi at a News conference, said the largest opposition leader could not redeem a similar promise in the 2012 manifesto of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and must therefore not be taken seriously.
He said the supposed elected assembly members who met Mr. Mahama did not represent the interest of all assembly members in Ghana and were only being used to pursue a hidden agenda to improve the electoral fortunes of the NDC.
Nana Senya said Former President Mahama had no clear cut policy to resource assembly members in the event of winning the 2020 general election hence resorting such fake promises to attract undeserved votes.
The National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), he noted, was capable of managing its own affairs without any political interference, if well-resourced.
He further stated, "We wish to appeal to Former President Mahama to leave assembly members alone in his scheme of things, unguarded political utterances and activities.
“The present government in its attempt to change the status quo, where the assembly members were key actors of the decentralization process through a referendum was vehemently opposed by the NDC, leading to its unfortunate suspension".
He said assembly members could fight for their inalienable rights under the constitution and did not need his intervention to improve their lives.
