Former IBF Bantamweight Champion Joseph ‘King Kong’ Agbeko has stated that the rematch bout against his latest contender Abner Mares will not be an easy task for the Mexican. Agbeko, who suffered over fifteen “low blows” from Abner Mares in his last fight, lost the IBF Bantamweight title, a loss which attracted widespread criticism. Speaking on Sports Night on Multi TV’s Joy Sports channel, the ‘King Kong’ explained that unlike many other boxers who got into the limelight through personal hard work, the Mexican is a nursed breed from scratch. “Abner Mares is the only “Golden Boy” fighter that they have picked from the grass and want to put on the map as a world champion,” he said. Even though Agbeko confirmed that a “few things happened before the fight” which really affected his performance, he was not ready to talk about them. He indicated that “Mares is not a heavy puncher but his gloves were customized. It was smaller than the normal sized gloves” which enabled him give stiff and painful punches,” he said. Agbeko also stated categorically that “it’s the style of Mares to give low blows to weaken his opponent but it was the duty of referee Russel Mora to ensure fairness in the ring.” The former IBF Bantamweight champion admitted that, “the low blows took away a lot of my strength and it was hard for me to fight but I kept pushing myself. It was the 11th round when the referee counted me that took a lot of hope from me because once they count you, you lose two points. That was when I realized it will end in a draw or a win for Mares because he was not warned and points were not deducted from him for the low blows.” “His style of fighting by giving low blows does not make him a good boxer at all. I think he’s going to have a lot of problems with that in the re-match because this time, everybody is going to watch if he’s going to punch below the belt or not'” Agbeko stated. The re-match is scheduled for December 14 2011.
