The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has vehemently condemned the harassment of journalists and pledged to protect press freedom if elected president in the upcoming elections.
He voiced deep concern over the increasing incidents of harassment against journalists in the country.
Addressing journalists in Accra on Sunday, Mr. Mahama emphasized that a free press is the cornerstone of a democratic society.
He stated that any form of harassment against journalists is a direct attack on democracy and must be addressed urgently.
Mr. Mahama assured that under his leadership, press freedom would be safeguarded and journalists would be able to perform their duties without fear of intimidation or violence.
The former president acknowledged the crucial role that a free press plays in holding the government accountable and ensuring transparency.
He further committed to collaborating with various stakeholders to put an end to the harassment of journalists.
Mr. Mahama highlighted the importance of creating a safe and conducive environment for media practitioners to operate freely and independently.
In conclusion, the NDC flagbearer reiterated his dedication to upholding democratic principles and protecting the rights of journalists.
He called on the public and other political leaders to join in the effort to defend press freedom and promote a culture of respect and tolerance for the media.
“I am not going to condone or conjure to harass journalists when they do the work that they have been mandated to do,” he stated.
