The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare says he has been supportive of the Director-General of Operations for the Ghana Police Service, COP George Alex Mensah.
Speaking before the ad-hoc committee set up by parliament, Dr. Dampare said he had built a cordial relationship with COP Alex Mensah and all officers under his command, and offers them the necessary support when needed.
“As a chief servant, anytime there is any private family thing associated with any of my commanders, I personally call them, encourage them, and offer any support that I need to offer.”
“Including my own brother [COP Alex Mensah], I was there for him 100% when his mother passed on, asking questions about the development and movement about the funeral.”
“On the day of the funeral, I marshaled all the commanders at POMAB (Police Management Board), went and sympathized with him,” the IGP said.
He also told the committee that he has co-existed peacefully with his colleagues and subordinates since he became IGP.
“George [Alex Mensah] is my big brother, Gyebi is my kid brother, Asare is my brother, we’ve been together for long,”the IGP said.
Dr. Dampare said he shows respect and courtesy towards his colleagues and subordinates irrespective of their ranks, in order to build teamwork and a sense of belongingness.
The IGP however disagreed with his colleagues and refuted all the allegations made against him.
When he appeared before the ad-hoc committee on Thursday, August 31, 2023, COP George Alex Mensah stated that the IGP is not managing the police service well.
“It is true. The current IGP is not managing the Service well. And I will not deny this today or tomorrow. I will say it everywhere I go. You can do your own investigation within the Service and you will know.”
According to COP Alex Mensah, police officers are unhappy with the IGP’s administration.
Senior Police Officer, Supt. George Asare, who was also heard on the leaked tape, also appeared before the committee and while at it, he asked for an in-camera hearing to discuss the IGP’s performance, saying he cannot do that in public.
