Former Finance Minister Dr Kwesi Botchwey says he refrained from taking up the role of running mate to the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flagbearer to make room for ‘generational transition’ in the party.
According to him, this move was necessary in order to give the party a refreshing appeal in a political terrain as dynamic as Ghana's.
“I think that every kingdom must take a generational transition. You can’t have the same generation of people leading and directing the party all the time,” he said.
Dr Botchwey was tipped to be among the top personalities to deputise the NDC flagbearer in the run-up to the December polls.
But the former Finance Minister believes it is time for the older generation to make way for a new crop of leaders while providing the necessary guidance where necessary.
He made these comments on the sidelines of the outdooring ceremony for Former Education Minister Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as running mate for the NDC ahead of the 2020 elections at the University of Professional Studies, Accra.
Dr Botchwey was, however, glad about John Mahama’s decision to select the former University of Cape Coast Vice-Chancellor for the position.
“I am immensely thrilled that Naana was chosen. You can see from her performance that she is, in every bit, the kind of Vice Presidential material that we need,” Dr Botchwey emphasised on Monday, July 27.
