Newly crowned BBC Africa Footballer of the year has assured fans he would win more laurels for the country.
Shortly after he was crowned on Friday, Asamoah Gyan told Joy FM’s Drive Time host Bola Ray that there are more things to come for Ghana.
Even in his glorious moments, the 24 year old is still humbled by the enormous success saying,“Fingers crossed. There are more things coming in my life. I am a young guy who is trying to build my future and everything.
“I am still learning; and am really happy for this achievement. It is a great achievement and I dedicate this award to all Ghanaians and the whole of Africa,” he said.
He was full of grace and appreciation to the many fans who voted for him.
"It’s incredible; it’s a record. That means the fans loved what I did this year and really appreciated my performance and everything. So I am really blessed and thank everybody who voted for me.”
Gyan beat the challenge from two of Africa’s best, Samuel Eto’o and Didier Drogba together with his compatriot Dede Ayew and Yaya Toure.
He is the third Ghanaian to have picked up the award after Samuel Osei Kufuor and Michael Essien.
The Sunderland striker still has his sights set on the Caf Africa player of the year which will be declared next week.
He is cautiously optimistic he would beat the same contenders- Eto’o, Drogba to Caf’s top award.
Gyan led the Black Stars to her first Nations Cup finals in 18 years scoring three of the Stars’ four goals in the tournament.
In the World Cup in South Africa, Asamoah Gyan again dazzled to glory, scoring three goals in the tournament, with a stupendous well taken half-volley against the United States which earned Ghana a 2-1 victory and eventually catapulted the country to the Quarter-final.
He however missed a crucial penalty kick in the last minute of the Quarter final duel against Uruguay, denying Ghana and Africa their first Semi-final berth.
He made amends by scoring the first penalty shoot-out after the game ended 1-1, but the Stars eventually lost the tie.
Gyan is in devastating form in Sunderland netting six goals in 14 appearances for the English Premiership side.
These achievements appear to have convinced football fans in Africa to vote him as the BBC Africa Footballer of the year, but as to whether it will convince Caf to give him the award, only time will tell.
