Hundreds of residents of Kpando Torkor in the Kpando Municipality of the Volta Region, would hit the streets to protest the deplorable state of the town's access roads on Friday.
This follows several attempts to get the roads fixed, “which proved futile,” said Nelson Deh, an opinion leader in the community.
About 1000 of the residents, including motorists, would take part in the demonstration which would take off from the Kpando Torkor main lorry station, travel through the Kpando traffic light and end at the premises of the Municipal Assembly.
A petition to the President would be presented through the Kpando Municipal Chief Executive, Geoffrey Kodzo Badasu.
According to the residents, the poor state of the roads is affecting health and economic activities, as the community hosts a major marketing center.
Most of these residents who are fisherfolk and traders say the state of the roads has contributed to a decline in sales, because their business partners are becoming reluctant in traveling to the town to trade with them.
According to them, this state of affairs is seriously affecting their livelihoods and the education of their children as well.
“We are unable to pay our children’s school fees and cloth them because we don't sell much these days. Our profits have declined”, a trader at the Torkor market lamented.
Motorists are also suffering the brunt of the bad state of the access roads. They are compelled to frequent the mechanical shops for maintenance due to frequent break downs.
Community leaders have, however, promised that the demonstration would be violent-free, as directed by the Police.
