How to care for weave-ons

Your weave wasn't cheap - so keeping it looking good is a top priority. Weaves should look natural - not wiggy. With basic maintenance it will last longer and you can avoid looking like you're wearing a birds nest. WRAP IT UP Do not aggravate your weave unnecessarily. While sleeping, lounging around the house or working out, always be sure to braid/wrap/pin curl and cover your hair weave with a silk/satin bonnet or scarf. This will reduce stress and breakage and greatly extend the life of your weave and help keep your style looking fresh. WASH WEEKLY Brush out any tangles beforehand. In the shower, with the hair hanging loose, allow the water to completely saturate your entire head. Apply a gentle detangling shampoo and lightly smooth it through the hair using soft strokes. Avoid pulling, bunching & scrubbing, as this will loosen the weft & tangle the hair. To rinse, stand under the shower stream allowing the water to run through hair & scalp until shampoo is totally cleansed from hair. KEEP IT CONDITIONED Remember that weave hair is dead & needs extra conditioning to remain hydrated and looking good. Use a superior moisturizing conditioner after washing. Apply conditioner in the same manner as shampoo. Rinse thoroughly to avoid build-up. Always apply a leave-in conditioner to lock-in moisture before blow-drying. DRY Thoroughly dry your weave after washing. I cannot stress this enough. With a hand-held dryer make sure you dry the tracks first. This requires some patience, but your tracks hold water & you run the risk of developing mildew, mold and possibly a smelly fungus. If you are using a hard shell dryer at home make sure you stay under for at least 45 minutes. RUSH GENTLY Starting with the ends, brush hair in downward strokes gently detangling as you move up the hair shaft. Take care not to pull or rip snags as this will break the hair and loosen the weft/track. STYLE When heat styling, always use a thermal protectant to prevent damage & fading. Straight weaves are very flexible and can be curled using hot rollers, wet set or curling irons. Use a finishing cream/oil/serum when wearing straight. Curly weaves should be finger combed & shaken out to preserve the curl pattern, but can also be flat ironed just like your real hair. Feel free to use (alcohol free) styling creams gels & sprays to define curls and hold style. Source: eHOW.com
